For many years now, the Caatinga – the only exclusively Brazilian biome – has been threatened by the rapid spread of the invasive vine Cryptostegeia madagascariensis. This has caused widespread economic and social damage in the carnauba’s production chain, as well as incalculable environmental losses.
Pontes, working with Prof. Lamartine Oliveira at the Federal University of Ceará, has developed an innovative and efficient method of reducing the impact of this threat. Prof. Oliveira, carried out a series of tests on alternative techniques for a controlling rubber vine, and now a solution is being shared with the carnauba community through articles, booklets and our website.
